Spelling
After achieving the expected Phonics standard, children in Years 2 through 6 progress to regular weekly spelling sessions focused on key vocabulary and spelling rules. To ensure learning is effective and memorable, our sessions follow a structured four-part structure: Revisit, Teach, Practice, and Apply.
At Turnditch, we follow the Spelling Shed scheme, which aligns directly with the English National Curriculum and makes word study fun and engaging.
We believe that spelling—as an essential transcription skill—must be explicitly taught, not just tested. To develop and sustain strong spelling habits, children receive direct, systematic instruction alongside a wide range of strategies to help them memorize spellings and confidently attempt new words in their writing.
To reinforce learning at school:

Children receive targeted weekly spelling lists to practice at home.

Every child has an individual Spelling Shed login, allowing them to practice their spellings through interactive games and activities.
