Physical Education

Exercise is the key, not only to physical health but to peace of mind.

– Nelson Mandela

PE

All children receive a broad and balanced PE curriculum regardless of year group or ability. Every child will access all of the key areas of the National Curriculum subject on offer at our school. Teachers plan PE with clear progression of skills and knowledge that we have devised as part of our curriculum offer to ensure that all children access PE at an age-appropriate level.

At Turnditch CE Primary School, our PE lessons follow a scheme of learning called Get Set 4 PE (GS4PE). We aim to instil a positive attitude towards PE and physical activity and believe GS4PE provides the platform to achieve this. The core value of GS4PE is to give every child the physical literacy, emotional and creative thinking skills to achieve in PE and sport, and across the curriculum.

GS4PE is aligned to the National Curriculum and focuses on the development of the three fundamental movement skills of a child’s development:

agilitybalance and coordination.

It allows for the progression of skills to be practiced before applying to traditional and non-traditional games and encourages healthy competition and cooperative learning through an inclusive approach to teaching PE.

GS4PE has a multi-ability focus and allows children to:

  • explore and create their own games
  • develop cognitive skills
  • understand the benefits of health and fitness.
  • engage in physical activity
  • work as a team

Extra Curricular

As well as our regular PE lessons, we hold daily opportunities for physical activity such as brain breaks and playground games with coaches at lunchtimes.

All children also have opportunities across the year to take part in regular sports events and inter-school competitions with other local schools. These events are organised through the Derbyshire Rural Sports Partnership team in association with Anthony Gell School and children’s successes are always celebrated fostering a true team spirit.

In EYFS, children begin to improve their fundamental movement skills and teachers begin to consider the development of agility, balance and coordination for each child.

Pupils in KS1 are given ample opportunities to develop their fundamental movement skills and extend their agility, balance and coordination. They engage in competitive and cooperative physical activities through games, dance and gymnastics.

Pupils in KS2 continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills such as running, jumping, throwing and catching. These skills are incorporated into competitive games, performances using movement patterns and evaluations of their own and others’ work. Pupils communicate and collaborate with each other and develop an understanding of how to improve in physical activities.

Swimming and Water Safety

Turnditch Primary School provides swimming instruction for all lower key stage 2 children. Children in Year 3 and 4 attend swimming lessons at the pool in Belper, where they are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of 25m using a range of strokes.

In particular, pupils are taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
